Can we give Vasambu (Sweetflag) to babies?

Vasambu, also known as Sweet Flag or Calamus, is a traditional herb that has been used for its healing properties in various cultures throughout history. The use of this plant is common in some cultures because it is used for teething babies, digestive problems, and as an antiseptic for minor wounds.

Issues related to digestion:

Vasambu may be used to alleviate symptoms of indigestion, gas, and bloating in children by taking it orally. As a result of its carminative properties, it is said to calm the digestive tract and aid in digestion.

Teething Discomfort Relief:

Vasambu is believed to have soothing properties that are effective in easing teething discomfort in babies, which is why it is sometimes used to treat the problem. The Vasambu is generally used as a small piece of Vasambu root or powder, which is rubbed gently onto the gums of the baby after he or she has taken it for the first time.

Repellent for insects:

Because of its reputation for repelling insects, some parents use Vasambu to shield their infants from mosquitoes and other insects. You can do this by burning the roots or leaves of the plant or by putting an oil or paste infused with Vasambu on the infant's skin.

Skin Care for Babies:

Traditional newborn skin care remedies occasionally include Vasambu , which can be applied topically to relieve rashes, small cuts, and skin irritations. However, as some babies may be allergic to specific plant extracts, it is important to use caution when applying topically.

While Vasambu has been used traditionally for many purposes, it is important to ensure its safety and suitability for individual babies as well as to be aware of any potential side effects or allergic reactions. Before using any herbal remedy on a baby, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional or a pediatrician.
